When should I begin sentencing preparation?

Begin discussing preparation with counsel as early as possible. Starting early gives you time to locate records, address factual errors, and document relevant work. If sentencing is close, call to discuss what can realistically be completed.

Does SAG guarantee a sentence reduction or early release?

No. Courts determine sentences and sentence modifications; BOP makes decisions within its authority concerning placement, programs, credits, and release. Individual examples do not predict another person’s outcome.

Is home confinement the same as a shorter court sentence?

No. Leaving a prison facility for home confinement does not itself mean the court shortened the sentence. For example, four months in a facility out of a 20-month sentence is 20% of the sentence spent in that facility before transfer; it should not be described as an 80% court sentence reduction.
