IRS Target Letters: Organizing the Notice and Next Deadlines
A tax-related target letter deserves prompt attention from federal defense counsel. SAG helps organize the factual and personal preparation record once counsel defines the assignment.

Identify the sender and the exact language
People often use IRS target letter to describe different kinds of tax-related correspondence. Read the actual sender, signature block, addressee, stated status and requested action. A prosecutor’s target notification, an IRS request and a grand-jury subpoena should not be treated as interchangeable.
The Justice Manual distinguishes targets and subjects in the grand-jury context. Those are meaningful terms, but the wording of a letter must be assessed by counsel. A page on the internet cannot classify your status from a paraphrased message.
Keep the notice intact
Retain the full letter, attachments, envelope, delivery information and any related email. Make a working copy for counsel without annotating or replacing the original. Record when it was received and by whom. Include deadlines exactly as written, with a separate field for any clarification counsel obtains.
Do not turn a response date into a guessed court date or assume an invitation is a required appearance. Have counsel identify what the communication requires, what choices exist and who will respond. SAG does not negotiate with prosecutors or advise whether to testify.
Prepare a concise factual handoff
A useful first handoff lists the notice, earlier government contacts, involved entities, tax periods expressly identified and the location of relevant records. It should also identify existing legal representation and any approaching business or personal deadlines that could affect preparation.
Keep allegations, disputed facts and confirmed background in separate categories. For example, a notice’s description of transactions belongs in a column identifying the government communication. Your own recollection belongs in a separately labeled account with sources to be checked. Neither should silently replace the other.
Coordinate individual and company responsibilities
A business owner may receive a personal letter while company personnel hold the records. An accountant may be asked about client work without controlling the company’s response. Identify who represents whom before distributing material. Counsel should decide authorized recipients and any conflicts or privilege questions.
For organizational purposes, record job titles, actual duties, dates of service and document access separately. An executive title does not describe every decision the person made, and access to a system does not by itself describe responsibility for its contents.
Preparation beyond the immediate notice
When counsel approves a preparation assignment, Joseph can build an individual chronology, personal-history inventory and supporting-document index. The engagement can identify the next review date, responsibility for factual gaps and what material will be delivered to counsel.
There is no automatic sentence reduction for receiving or responding to a letter. If sentencing preparation later becomes relevant, evidence of actual conduct, treatment, family obligations and completed corrective work should be documented accurately. Do not create a polished personal account that contradicts the records being reviewed.

Is a target letter the same as an indictment?
No. Counsel should explain the specific communication and its implications. Do not infer that charges have been filed from the phrase target letter alone.
A defined engagement with Joseph De Gregorio
Agree on the scope, records, authorized recipients and review dates before work begins. Counsel retains legal advice, strategy and submissions. SAG can deliver an indexed personal record, a chronology, a factual gap list and an agreed preparation schedule. An engagement does not automatically make every communication privileged; counsel determines the appropriate arrangements.
SAG serves clients nationwide from Freehold, New Jersey, with travel arranged for cases. Tell Joseph your current stage and next deadline. Do not send case documents or sensitive allegations through the initial website form.
