After Federal Tax Fraud Charges: A Preparation Guide
After charges, preparation needs a clear owner, an accurate calendar and a reliable record. Defense counsel directs the legal case; SAG supports the agreed personal preparation work.

Build the case-stage register
Record the charging document, court, case stage and deadlines confirmed by counsel or official orders. Keep each date tied to its source. Do not rely on a generic online timetable for appearances, plea decisions, trial or sentencing.
The Justice Department’s federal-case overview describes investigation and later prosecution stages. Individual cases vary. Counsel should explain the meaning of the documents received and any obligations that apply now.
Separate allegations from the personal preparation record
Maintain a count-by-count reference to the actual charge without treating an allegation as an established fact. Counsel decides which issues are contested and how any plea or other resolution affects the record.
In a separate working file, organize employment, education, family responsibilities and relevant personal history. Label unsupported recollections and missing documents. Building this file does not require inventing an admission or circulating a narrative before counsel has reviewed it.
Coordinate the financial materials
Identify returns, tax periods, government calculations, defense analyses and payment records. Give each calculation a date and version. A reviewer should be able to distinguish tax loss for sentencing, civil balances and restitution questions.
The same bank statement may support more than one issue, but the issues should not be collapsed into one total. Use cross-references and a factual gap list so counsel and financial professionals can focus on the questions assigned to them.
Prepare for the PSR when counsel confirms timing
If the case reaches the presentence process, preparation can include a personal-history inventory, interview agenda, supporting-document index and a schedule for review. Do not assume every charged case is already at that stage.
Joseph helps the client communicate accurately in their own voice and identify what requires correction or support. Counsel retains responsibility for legal advice, objections and decisions about what material should be submitted.
Keep daily responsibilities in the plan
A case can affect employment, caregiving, transportation and household finances. Document practical obligations and confirmed restrictions, then identify the appropriate professional for each issue. A workable plan distinguishes current arrangements from hoped-for solutions.
Any later surrender or release preparation should follow actual orders and confirmed information. SAG does not promise a sentence, prison designation or release date. The engagement should define what is being delivered now and what would require a later scope.

Should every charged person begin surrender planning immediately?
Planning should match the actual stage and counsel’s guidance. Do not assume a conviction, custodial sentence or designation that has not occurred.
A defined engagement with Joseph De Gregorio
Retain qualified federal defense counsel first for an investigation or criminal charge. Agree on the scope, records, authorized recipients and review dates before SAG’s work begins. Counsel retains legal advice, strategy and submissions. SAG can deliver an indexed personal record, a chronology, a factual gap list and an agreed preparation schedule. An engagement does not automatically make every communication privileged; counsel determines the appropriate arrangements.
SAG serves clients nationwide from Freehold, New Jersey, with travel arranged for cases. Tell Joseph your current stage and next deadline. Do not send case documents or sensitive allegations through the initial website form.
