Prepare for an accurate interview

The presentence investigation is probation’s process, not a marketing exercise. Confirm interview arrangements with counsel and organize the requested sources. Avoid rehearsed answers designed to conceal uncertainty. If you do not know a date or amount, identify the source needed to verify it before relying on the figure.

Separate personal and business finances

Organize individual income, ownership interests, liabilities and necessary expenses. Keep business revenue distinct from personal income and identify jointly held or restricted property. Counsel and qualified financial professionals should evaluate uncertain classifications or valuations. Do not omit a financial interest because it is difficult to explain.

Review the offense chronology with counsel

Your personal account should not silently contradict established facts or any admissions. Identify discrepancies and questions for counsel before preparing explanations. Distinguish firsthand knowledge from assumptions about other participants. SAG can help organize the chronology and source index while counsel determines legal positions and submissions.

Verify the broader history

Check employment, education, family, health and treatment information against available records. Character support and practical plans should use consistent dates and accurate claims. Prepare a list of corrections or missing material for counsel’s review. A coherent file supports the process, but probation prepares the official report and the court decides the sentence.

Does SAG control what probation writes?

No. SAG provides preparation support. Probation prepares the report, counsel handles legal review and objections, and the court makes sentencing decisions.
