Federal Prison Family Concerns: Safety, Health and Contact Routes
For an urgent threat or medical concern, contact the institution directly and communicate the specific facts; do not rely on a routine CorrLinks message. For unresolved non-emergency inquiries, BOP directs families to try institution staff first and then its Support Coordinator Program when appropriate.
Primarily for BOP-operated facilities. Other detention settings may use different rules and systems. Source review: October 10, 2026.
What information helps staff act on a concern?
Provide the person’s name, register number, facility, dates, factual observations, and a callback number. Distinguish firsthand information from assumptions and document whom you contacted.
When should a family contact a BOP Support Coordinator?
Use the Support Coordinator Program for unresolved inquiries or general questions after attempts with the institution. Its contact channel is monitored during normal weekday business hours; it is not a round-the-clock emergency line.
How do privacy and administrative remedies affect family advocacy?
Staff may be limited in what they can disclose. Coordinate any necessary consent with the person and counsel. A family inquiry does not automatically satisfy the incarcerated person’s grievance procedures or deadlines.
How should you document a concern before calling?
Prepare a short factual summary so staff can identify the person and understand what needs attention. A clear timeline is more useful than a long message mixing unrelated disputes. For immediate concerns, make the call promptly; completing a perfect record should not delay reporting credible urgent information.
- Record the person’s name, register number and current institution.
- State the specific safety, health or access concern.
- Identify dates and distinguish firsthand information from what someone reported.
- Explain any prior contact with the institution and the response received.
- Provide a callback number and request the appropriate next contact.
- Keep a dated log and share relevant information with counsel.
When is escalation appropriate?
BOP’s Support Coordinator Program supplements institution staff; it does not replace them or operate as an emergency dispatch service. Use its published contact guidance for unresolved inquiries. Ask counsel about legal remedies and any deadlines. Keep a family request for information separate from the incarcerated person’s administrative grievance process, and do not assume one substitutes for the other.
Where can your family find related guidance?
Use the Federal Prison Directory, prison preparation services, and release and reentry planning for related preparation.
