Federal Prison: First Days and Transfers for Families
Confirm both the physical facility and the agency responsible for custody before arranging visits, sending money, or opening a messaging account. A federal defendant may be held outside a BOP-operated institution, where different vendors and procedures apply.
Primarily for BOP-operated facilities. Other detention settings may use different rules and systems. Source review: October 10, 2026.
What does the BOP Inmate Locator tell you?
Use the official locator and verify the committed name and register number. If the location is unclear, contact counsel or the responsible institution rather than assuming the courthouse identifies the jail.
How are detention, transfer, and designated prison different?
Temporary detention, movement between institutions, and the facility designated for serving a sentence are different stages. Contact arrangements can change during these transitions.
What should you recheck after a transfer?
Confirm the new mailing address, visiting process, contact access, and institution handbook. Do not assume arrangements at the previous institution automatically apply.
What should the family check in the first days of custody?
Confirm what is known, what is pending, and who can answer each unresolved question. Temporary uncertainty about a location or contact setup should lead to a verification step, not a guessed schedule. Families can prepare household responsibilities immediately even when institution-specific arrangements are still being established.
- Keep court and surrender instructions with counsel’s contact information.
- Confirm the current physical facility and responsible custodial agency.
- Record the committed name and register number when available.
- Obtain the institution’s current public handbook and contact instructions.
- Check visiting approval, phone access, messaging and deposit procedures separately.
- Update the family contact sheet when a transfer is confirmed.
What should you avoid assuming during a transfer?
Do not assume that the last mailing address, visiting schedule or communication vendor remains correct. Confirm the new location before traveling or mailing important material. A gap in routine contact alone does not establish what happened; if you have concrete safety or medical information, contact the institution and counsel promptly with those facts.
Where can your family find related guidance?
