How SEC Investigations Start: Build a Reliable Contact and Records Timeline
The first request you receive may arrive after information has already reached the SEC. Organize what is known without guessing why the investigation began.

Identify the first verified event
The SEC describes several possible sources of investigative information, including investor complaints and market surveillance. Those possibilities do not identify the source in your case. Start with the actual correspondence, the date it arrived, its recipient and the response date counsel confirms. Keep a news report or workplace rumor in a separate category from an official document.
Map the business timeline
Prepare an index of the relevant offering periods, trading activity, employment changes and communications already available to you. Record which entity held an account and who maintained the records. A company name, fund name and investment vehicle may refer to different legal entities. Preserve those distinctions instead of compressing the history into a single company narrative.
Separate requests from conclusions
A document request does not establish that every person mentioned is accused of misconduct. Nor does a quiet period establish that a matter has closed. Counsel evaluates status and response obligations. Your working log should identify the request, the source, the responsible reviewer and unresolved questions without attaching unsupported legal labels.
Make preparation useful to counsel
A practical first deliverable is a dated contact log with an entity map and a custodian list. An unanswered question remains visible until a reliable source resolves it. SAG can help organize approved personal and professional background, while counsel directs evidence preservation, collection, privilege and government communications. Do not search systems you are no longer authorized to access or create replacement versions of original records.

Does an SEC inquiry mean charges will follow?
No. An inquiry is not a finding or a prediction. Counsel should evaluate the documents and current procedural status.
A defined preparation assignment
Work directly with Joseph to establish the scope, source records, authorized recipients and review dates. Agreed deliverables can include a personal-history chronology, an indexed supporting file, factual questions and a practical preparation schedule. Investigation-stage legal decisions require qualified federal defense counsel. An engagement with SAG does not automatically establish privilege.
SAG serves clients nationally from Freehold, New Jersey, with travel arranged for cases. Share your stage and next deadline in the initial inquiry. Do not upload investigative records, investor details or privileged advice.
