Begin with the actual stage and assignment

A money laundering allegation can arise in a broader financial investigation, alongside another charged offense or after a plea. Identify the actual notice or filing, the person involved and the next confirmed deadline. A business title, account signature or association with another participant does not explain the whole record. Qualified federal defense counsel evaluates the allegations and controls legal responses. SAG helps organize the individual preparation work within a defined engagement.

Keep financial evidence and personal history connected

A useful preparation file allows counsel to move from a statement to its source. Organize the professional chronology, account responsibilities, relevant transactions and supporting records. Distinguish personal knowledge from information learned later. Keep financial calculations separate from narrative assumptions. Qualified financial specialists may be necessary to analyze tracing or amounts; SAG does not replace that work.

Prepare before the presentence interview

After a plea or conviction, accurate personal and financial information matters to the presentence process. Organize employment, education, family circumstances, treatment records, financial disclosures and documented corrective work as appropriate. Probation prepares the official report. SAG can help the client prepare the underlying record, identify gaps and coordinate review with counsel without promising how probation or the court will assess it.

Define what counsel receives

An agreed assignment may produce a source-indexed personal chronology, professional-role summary, financial-record inventory, list of unresolved factual questions and preparation calendar. Counsel decides what should be collected, reviewed or submitted. Confirm the authorized recipients and review schedule at the outset. An engagement with SAG does not automatically establish privilege.

Connect published analysis to the preparation problem

Joseph is a recurring Bloomberg Law and Bloomberg Tax contributor and a member of Law360’s 2026 Criminal Practice Editorial Advisory Board. His published restitution analysis is relevant when financial assumptions need to be inspectable. His professional work does not establish that a publisher endorses SAG or that any result will follow. The publication column provides pathways to inspect the work itself.

Can preparation begin before a plea?

Yes, within a defined nonlegal assignment coordinated with defense counsel. The work must fit the actual stage and should not assume guilt, admissions or a particular outcome.

Sources and a defined preparation assignment

Official context: U.S. Code: 18 U.S.C. § 1956. Sources checked November 6, 2026. Counsel evaluates the law and the manual applicable to the individual facts and dates. These preparation steps do not determine criminal liability or a sentencing calculation.

Work directly with Joseph to define deliverables, authorized recipients and review dates. An assignment may include a personal and professional chronology, source index, factual review questions and practical preparation calendar. SAG is not a law firm or forensic accounting provider. An engagement does not automatically establish privilege.
